The Ontario Bariatric Network (OBN) is a collaborative network consisting of 12 Bariatric Centres across Ontario with interdisciplinary teams of bariatric experts that provide comprehensive medical and surgical bariatric services. The 12 Bariatric Centres across Ontario include 7 Bariatric Centres of Excellence (BCoEs), 2 Regional Assessment and Treatment Centres (RATCs), and 3 Surgical Only Sites.
A Bariatric Centre of Excellence is an organization with a team of experts promoting the collaboration and use of best practices around the care of people suffering with obesity and obesity related diseases.
Certain criteria must first exist in order for a centre to qualify as a BCoE:
BCoEs provide comprehensive pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care for their patients. In some instances, patients may be followed pre-operatively and post-operatively at a BCoE, but have their bariatric surgery done at one of our Surgical Only Sites. This allows for a greater volume of bariatric surgeries to be done and improves wait times and efficiencies in patient care.
There are seven (7) Bariatric Centres of Excellence in Ontario and they are listed below:
RATCs act as a resource for improving the patients’ knowledge base, enabling them to implement strategies to deal with their obesity in a non-surgical way.
RATCs provide comprehensive pre-operative and post-operative care for their patients; they do not perform surgeries at their location, but partner with BCoEs and Surgical Only Sites to provide bariatric surgery for patients.
The following are the two (2) RATCs that are part of the Ontario Bariatric Program:
Surgical Only Sites do not follow patients pre-operatively or post-operatively, but rather partner with select RATCs and BCoEs to provide bariatric surgery to a greater volume of patients. Patients receive pre-operative care at their respective RATC or BCoE site, but may be sent to one of the Surgical Only Sites to have their bariatric surgery. After surgery, patients return to their respective RATC or BCoE site for all post-operative care and follow-up.
