Guelph General Hospital
Our History
The Bariatric clinic opened on August 19, 2009. We are part of the Ontario Bariatric Network Strategy, which is working to increase Ontario’s capacity to provide both medical and surgical components of bariatric treatment to morbidly obese adults and children.
Each person who is considering having surgery must have a comprehensive assessment and screening completed by the interdisciplinary team prior to surgery.
The Guelph General Bariatric Clinic is also a referral site for the Windsor Bariatric Assessment Center. Patients meet with a social worker, dietitian, and nurse and physicians in Windsor and when they are ready to meet a surgeon they are referred to the Guelph Clinic Process. The post op care is then taken care of by the Windsor Clinic except for surgeon visits to Guelph.
Guelph Clinic Process
- The Bariatric Clinic receives a patient referral from a physician from the Ontario Bariatric central registration office
- The Bariatric Clinic Secretary mails the patient a date to attend the mandatory information session at the clinic
- If the patient has attended an information session and wishes to proceed with more visits to the clinic he/she is given an appointment at the clinic (in the next few weeks)
- The patient is asked to fill in and mail or bring with them a medical history form which they have been given at the information session
- The patient attends an appointment at the clinic for approximately 3 hours and is interviewed by all 3 professionals
- Reg. Nurse
A medical history is taken and the patient is given information about the surgery. Several medical tests will be requisitioned if they have not already been done including a sleep study, blood work, upper G.I., ultrasound of upper abdomen and sometimes an Internist consult.
- Reg. Dietitian
A dietary history and discussion re: making a food journal and food choices including a review of Canada’s food guide
- Reg. Social Worker
A psychosocial assessment is completed to help ensure patients are stable and able to prepare for the expected lifestyle change
- Next visit to the clinic: 6-8 weeks later
The nurse will review the medical tests, the dietitian will review their food journal and any changes that have been made and the social worker will review their lifestyle changes.
- The next visit may be with one or all of the professionals again or may be with a surgeon depending on the physical or mental readiness of the patient for surgery. Some patients require many counselling sessions with the dietitian, social worker or require other investigative procedures.
- Meeting with the surgeon….if the patient is accepted for surgery it is usually within the next 6-8 weeks. Or the patient may be asked to have further investigations or counselling.
